In 2015, just out of the Navy I inherited this banjo from my father’s father Grandpa Russ. By the time it made its way into my hands, the case was shredded; constructed of pressed particle board and some sort of old faux leather. I looked around at the available case options online and I couldn’t find anything that would fit its custom long neck for under $300, so I decided to make one in my free time. I made this puppy from 1/2″ plywood and it is heavy as all hell. Wrapped it in outdoor patio furniture fabric, and lined it with black faux fur, with fence gate hardware from the depot. I had some scrap pieces of leather from a guitar strap I was making, so I cut out a circle of black leather and used decorative black pushpins to create a “J” as a family emblem. This thing is made so beefy, I am sure it will hold up until well after I hand it down to my son or daughter one day, I just hope they can manage to move it!
Here’s a goofy video I took upon completion of this project, please bear with me, I was a bit excited, and I didn’t get out much at the time.
