Our fellow Shadowhawk Trieu commissioned me to make him a 21″x24″x2.5″ cutting board. I explained that his desired thickness was a bit overkill and that I could make him a matching set with an additional lazy susan, coasters, maybe three matching cutting boards, and he liked the idea of the lazy susan and coaster addition. So I sawed the wood to dimension and got to town on this thing. Made of Figured Maple, Walnut, Light and Dark Macacauba (Hormigo Negro and Hormigo Rojo).
The board measures 21″x24″x1.6″, with chamfered edges and round finger grooves on the sides. Sanded to 320 grit, finished by soaking in fractionated coconut oil (MCT Oil) and sealed with home made MCT oil/beeswax paste.
The matching lazy susan is made with the same wood, with an 18″ diameter and a 14″ dia. hormigo rojo base. The bearing is 12″ in diameter and is weight rated for 1000lbs. Cork pads prevent table scuffing, susan finished with sanding sealer and four coats of semi-gloss lacquer.
The coasters are constructed of the same wood with a cork layer on the bottom of each. The coaster holder is made of patterned hormigo negro and maple and posts from hormigo rojo. Finished with sanding sealer and durable gloss lacquer.
The bottle opener was a special gift to Trieu for the commission, and it was crafted from the old 10″ saw blade that was used in my table saw to cut the board lumber to dimension. I heat-blued the steel to 350*C and quenched in oil overnight. The wood handle was made with the same lumber cut into thin, 1/8″ pieces, glued on end in a matching pattern. The steel was shaped before blueing, with slots cut through the tang for lasting adhesion with epoxy. The wood handle was shaped before final glueing, temporarily held together by hot glue. Epoxy was used to fuse the steel and wood together, and after curing it was sanded lightly with 320 grit paper and sealed with five coats of gloss lacquer.
