My first piece of furniture. I was working with a sawmill guy in Olympia, milling up a few old maple logs, and after the first cut into the second log, this guy’s eyes lit up like times square on New Year’s. I peered over at what he saw, (thinking it was a snake or strange bug or something), and to my surprise were all sorts of colors in the grain, outlined in thin, dark black lines. This was my first time seeing and learning of spalted maple, and the sawmill guy gave me a portion of a cutoff. The next day I bought a few concrete form pins from the trusty depot and welded them together, along with some scrap 1/8″ steel, to form the legs and base. A gift for Beverly. We still use it today!
